Certificate Courses
The Institute offers and will progressively develop a range of certificate courses designed to provide structured and practical education in selected areas of human rights, law, justice administration and institutional practice.
1. Certificate in Human Rights Education and Customary Law
This programme examines human rights education alongside the nature, operation and contemporary relevance of customary law. It explores the relationship between customary norms and human rights standards, with attention to traditional institutions and community actors.
2. Certificate in Human Rights and Traditional Justice Administration
This programme focuses on human rights standards and traditional or community-based justice systems, including procedural fairness, access to justice, protection of vulnerable persons and compatibility with applicable standards.
3. Certificate in Human Rights-Based Policing
This programme strengthens the capacity of police officers and relevant actors to perform policing functions in accordance with human rights standards, including arrest, detention, use of force, accountability and investigation.
4. Certificate in Human Rights and Correctional Administration
This programme addresses the rights and dignity of persons deprived of liberty, conditions of detention, rehabilitation, accountability, treatment of prisoners and the responsibilities of correctional personnel.
5. Certificate in Human Rights, Security and Law Enforcement
This programme examines human rights, national security and law enforcement in situations involving public order, security operations, investigations, detention and the use of force.
6. Certificate in Customary Law, Gender Justice and Children's Rights
This programme examines customary law and its interaction with gender justice and children's rights, encouraging practices consistent with constitutional and international human rights standards.
The Institute may develop additional certificate courses in response to emerging human rights concerns, institutional needs, professional requirements and requests from partner organisations.
